External Regeneration System
The Hyperbaric External Regeneration System is a standalone unit designed to circulate and re-process gas from the decompression chamber while at depth, either on mixed gas or air; the system controls the environmental conditions in the chamber ensuring that the temperature, humidity and CO2 are maintained. The HERS incorporates three basic units, the positive displacement blower, hyperbaric environmental conditioning unit (HECU-06: Chilling and Heating) and sodasorb CO2 canisters.
The positive displacement blower, with an actual circulation of 4110.6cu.ft (116.4m3) per hour, changes the atmosphere in a 6-Man 882.8 cu.ft (25m3) decompression chamber 4.66 times per hour. The sodasorb CO2 removal canisters are downstream of the DDC before the Robuschi blower. This enables the chamber gas to be drawn through the sodasorb removing the CO2 and other trace contaminants.
The chamber gas, aided by the blower, passes through the HECU-06 heat exchangers where the chamber optimal humidity and temperature are controlled to within +/- 1 degree of the relative set points. The humidity inside the DDC is controllable between 50% – 70% and the temperature between 27oC – 35oC. The units are controlled by a humidity/temperature transmitter which sends a signal to the control unit on the SAT panel and is fully automatic. In the unlikely event of a controller failure, the HERS is fitted with a full manual override.
